Best of the Web
Periodically we compile a list of the best of what the Internet has to offer to teachers—be that in the classroom or just in daily life. The current edition highlights music education. The sites focus on playing music, creating music, understanding music, music’s role in history, and the need to study music in all its forms.

- A Passion for Jazz
- A Passion for Jazz features lesson plans for learning jazz. It also details the history of jazz, defines various types of jazz, and showcases a timeline of jazz history.
- Ilearnmusic.com
- A resource that enables music teachers to share ideas and network globally, Ilearnmusic features sound bites of various instruments for classroom use. It also serves as a great resource for students, featuring music lessons on video as well as independent practice techniques.
- Music Hall: Music Education Center
- This site provides links for music appreciation, composition, history and theory.
- M.U.S.I.C: Musicians United for Songs in the Classroom, Inc.
- M.U.S.I.C. brings new meaning to everyday songs by examining their historical connections. Along with lesson plans, this site has examples of student work to show how this interpretation of music can augment any 7th -12th grade history lesson.
- The Mr. Holland’s Opus Music Foundation
- The composer for the motion picture Mr. Holland’s Opus started this foundation in 1996 to support music education. The foundation gives new or refurbished instruments to schools in need. To date, it has given new and refurbished instruments worth $4.2 million dollars to schools in need.
- The National Association for Music Education
- The mission of the National Association for Music Education is to advance the music arts by encouraging study and performance. The organization offers music education news, workshops, conferences, competitions, and other programs to further music education.
- The New York Philharmonic Kidzone
- This interactive site allows children to learn about music on their own. It has a step-by-step guide that explains how to create instruments out of everyday items and features informational sections with composer biographies and histories of instruments. There is also a composition workshop where students can create their own music.
- PBS Teacher Source
- Teachers can browse free PBS arts and literature lesson plans about music. A search function allows teachers to specify the age level of their students.
- The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum
- Free detailed lesson plans devised at Summer Teacher Institutes are available on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s website. Teachers can also sign up for workshops and institutes.
- Support Music
- Support Music promotes the importance of music education, explains grassroots efforts across the country to revive it, and encourages communities to support music education programs in schools.
- The Symphony: An Interactive Guide
- This well-organized online guide to the symphony contains easy-to-browse information about composers, famous works, orchestra seating charts, and descriptions of symphony forms.
- VH1: Save the Music Foundation
- VH1’s Save the Music Foundation offers a guide to building a music education program, encourages individuals to write to their representatives in Congress about the importance of music education, and provides instruments to classrooms around the country.
